Representation in politics is not just a matter of fairness—it's essential for a thriving democracy. But despite efforts to diversify, ethnic minorities remain underrepresented in UK political institutions, and their voices are often unheard in the policymaking process.
Join us for an engaging panel discussion with three influential leaders who have stood for or held elected offices. They are:
Amna Ahmad: Oxford and Harvard alumni, UK Parliamentary General Election Candidate 2015 and 2017, Lib Dem Vice President and Campaigns and Advocacy Lead for the Democracy Network
Jovan Owusu-Nepaul: A political campaigner who is outspoken on the rise of poverty and inequality. He spent 2 years working for the Leader of the Labour Party in Labour HQ, before contesting Clacton in the 2024 General Election.
Rita Patel: Vice Chair of Operation Black Vote, pioneer of Asian women’s organisations in Leicester, and former Councillor and Assistant Mayor of Community and Equalities in Leicester City.
This event will explore the critical importance of diversity in elected positions and how it shapes policies that affect all citizens. Our speakers will share their own personal journeys, the challenges they faced, and what can be done to make the UK’s political system more inclusive.
