TV debates give millions of voters the chance to see leaders challenged on their policies and vision for the future.

But there is no consistency at all around the format of the TV debates, who takes part, and even if they happen.

Leaving decisions up to the party leaders and TV channels risks the debates becoming skewed and unbalanced.

We need an Independent Debates Commission to organise leaders’ debates at General Elections, ensuring they are run fairly and independently.
